Puppet, Foreman and Wazuh homelab

Rebuilding what I run for clients, from scratch, on my own machines.

In plain terms

A homelab is a small setup of your own machines where you can build things and break them safely. At work the systems belong to clients, so they aren't the place to practise.

I wanted to run the same kinds of tools myself from scratch: Puppet to manage the machines, Foreman to keep track of them, and Wazuh, a security tool that looks for suspicious activity.

The problem

I wanted somewhere to practise the infrastructure patterns used in enterprise security deployments, outside of client environments.

What I did

Over two weeks I built a lab across two Raspberry Pis, two Oracle Cloud servers and one other machine. Puppet Server, PuppetDB and Foreman handled configuration, Logstash shipped logs, Wazuh provided threat detection, and alerts went to Telegram.

I wrote my own Puppet modules for it, including one for autossh tunnels.

The outcome

Hands-on experience running Puppet Server, PuppetDB and Foreman end to end. The Puppet code is on GitHub.
